This was written about two years ago, when our guild was running pretty heavily with the guild The Order of Darmentia. For a long time, I was an officer in that guild as well. The quest that started everything was the free-to-play raid, Tempest Spine, for those that don't know the names in the story.
The Birth of a New Alliance
The leader of the Elves of Eberron, Bladeedge, had sent one of his officers, an Elf Wizard known as Avian Keshin to scout an active volcano. Having heard reports that a Storm Giant has forced Drow and other races of giants to work for him, Bladeedge wanted to confirm the rumors, and if possible, deal with the Storm Giant before things could get out of hand.
Avian, wearing his usual flowing robes of blue and gold, took a caravan as close to the volcano as he could get. His services were put to good use the in caravan, providing arcane backup to the warriors who escorted it. Once he was close to the volcano however, he quietly left the caravan, and traveled on foot to the foot of the mountain.
The mountain was alive with activity. The flaming bodies of Fire Elementals were visible from a distance, and even the hulking bodies of Hill Giants could been seen. Peering at the foot of the mountain from what was left of a pocket of scorched trees, he estimated his chances of sneaking into one of the caves that pocketed the base of the mountain. Deciding that he would have to get closer to the mountain in order to take a better look, he quietly stepped out of the tree line and moved out into the open. Muttering an incantation, he cast an invisibility spell on himself, allowing him to get close without being seen, though he still left traces of his passing in the soft dirt. After all, he had no formal training in being stealthy.
As he approached the mountain, he saw several of the elementals and giants turn and move toward what appeared to be a road that lead directly into the mountain. Stopping in his tracks, Avian turned in that direction, wanting to see what got the attention of the enemy forces. What he saw, caught him totally off guard.
A small raiding party, comprised of 11 people, were approaching the mountain, making no attempt at stealth. Though the raiders were all wearing different styles of armor, they were all painted the same color, purple. The one who appeared to be leading the party was dressed in long, flowing purple robes, and carried no weapons, unlike the others in the group.
As Avian watched, the leader of the raiders lifted a hand, and several missiles made of ice shot out of his open palm. The missiles hit an oncoming fire elemental at full force, sending the elemental backwards several feet. As the elemental hit the ground, it's entire body had frozen, and the force of the impact caused it to shatter into hundreds of tiny fragments.
The warriors of the group were taking off the giants with ease, first bashing in kneecaps or slicing tendons in the back of the knee before a quick blow to the head of throat finished it off. It wasn't long before every enemy that approached this party had been killed.
Avian, intrigued by the presence of this party, made his way toward them, dismissing the invisibility spell as he approached, his hands held in the air. His own robes marked him as a Wizard, and even though his hands were free of weapons, that didn't mean he went to the party in peace.
The leader of the raiders turned as he saw Avian approaching, and said a quick word to his men. The warriors all turned toward the Wizard, weapons ready. Surely, they were all wondering if this new person was a friend or foe.
The moment that Avian was within earshot of the group, he called out to them. "Greetings, warriors! I am Avian Keshin, Master Wizard of the Elves of Eberron." He continued his approach to the raiding party, keeping his hands up, and his mouth closed after his greeting. The last thing he needed was to provoke the group into attacking him.
Looking over the one who called himself Avian, the leader made a small hand gesture to his men, all of which lowered their weapons, though they were still obviously at the ready. "Well met Avian. I am Dramentia, the Dragon Mind, leader of the Order of Dramentia. What brings you out to the lair of Sor'jek, the Storm Giant?"
That confirmed Avian's fears. This Sor'jek is indeed raising an army of Drow and giants to do battle. Avian bowed deeply to Dramentia. "My leader has sent me here to investigate rumors. Rumors that say that Sor'jek is building an army. From what I have seen, those rumors are true. Do you know anything else about this Sor'jek?" he asked Dramentia.
Dramentia narrowed his eyes at Avian, still unsure of his intentions. He had never before heard of the Elves of Eberron. And why would the be interested in Sor'jek in the first place? "Sor'jek is indeed raising an army. We have just defeated some of his forces, though there are surely many more inside the caves. We will put a stop to his plans. Return to your leader."
Avian didn't appreciate the tone of Dramentia's voice, and he couldn't return just to say that he didn't find out himself, but was simply told about it from someone he had just met. "No, I'm afraid I can't do that. I must see things for myself. And if you should not succeed in your venture, if would be that much harder for me to do my job, as Sor'jek will be expecting more trouble. I request permission to join you."
The leader of the Order glared at the other Wizard. He could see that Avian would follow them into the mountain anyway, just to make sure the job was done. A small smile touched his face. "Very well, Avian. You may join us, but stay were I can see you." He still didn't trust Avian, but there was honor in that elf. And something else that he couldn't quite put his finger on yet.
The party thus entered the caves of the mountain, working their way toward the summit, where Sor'jek was sure to be. Along the way they encountered more giants, as well as Drow were more than skilled warriors in their own right. Avian and Dramentia worked in tandem, sending lighting bolts, ice missiles, and fireballs at the enemy forces, scattering them so the warriors of the Order could quickly dispatch them before they recovered. As they fought together, Avian and Dramentia quickly became friends. They complemented each other, watching out for the other, in the event that an enemy would get too close while the warriors of the Order were dealing with others.
As they approached Sor'jek's lair, Dramentia briefed his men of what a Storm Giant could do, so that none would be caught unaware. Stepping into the chamber, Sor'jek bellowed a challenge and called forth a great rolling fog that could confused the invaders of his home. With a wave of his hand, Avian called forth his own winds that blew the fog away, leaving the Giant out in the open.
The battle against the leader of the giants took longer, but Sor'jek was more skilled, and no where near as stupid as most giants, but eventually he succumbed to his wounds and used a spell that no one knew giants could use. Teleport. Avian cursed as the Giant escaped, even though his hold on the region was shattered for the time being. His forces were demolished and it would take many months to gather more for an army, if others would join him after his failure.
Dramentia, feeling much the same about Sor'jek's escape, turned toward Avian. "Thank you for your help, my friend." He smiled broadly at Avian. This one adventure formed a deep friendship between the two wizards. "When he rears his ugly head again, I hope you will join us once more."
Avian returned the smile and held out his hand to his new friend. "And when that happens, I will bring my own warriors along, to help yours out. Should you ever need me, call for me." Both being Wizards, they would know how to talk to each other over great distances. "The Elves of Eberron will happily fight along side you."
Dramentia took Avian's hand and firmly shook it, sealing a new alliance between the two groups. "And if all of the Elves of Eberron are as honorable and capable as you, we will happily fight along side them." Releasing Avian's hand, he turns toward his men. "Let it be known, from this day forth, that the Order of Dramentia and the Elves of Eberron are now allies! Aid them as you would aid yourselves, as you may end up relying on them someday!"
Thus the Alliance of the Order was formed. To this day the Elves of Eberron and the Order of Dramentia join forces to take on the forces that would do great harm to the citizens of Eberron.
